I'm a writer and occasional short documentary filmmaker whose articles and videos have been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Slate.com, Washington Monthly, Guernica, The New Republic, Tablet Magazine, and Salon.com.

I received my BA in religious studies from Yale University and an MFA in nonfiction writing from Columbia University. By day I'm in communications with The University of Texas System Population Health Group.

I live in Austin, Texas, with my wife, historian and psychotherapist Jessica Grogan, and my kids Jolie (11), Asa (8), and Gideon (2).

Exit Right, which was published in February 2016 by Simon &  Schuster, is my first book.
